Interview Tips

Learn how to put your best foot forward. Employers want to hire someone who "wants" to work for them.

Work on selling yourself! Learn as much as you can about the hiring authority (interviewer), the company and the position. The more detailed the information you have about the position and company, the better prepared and more interested you will appear.

Do your homework! Be prepared for the interview. Visit the company's web site and collect as much information as possible.  If necessary, spend time at the library and use their reference materials.

Resume/CV Tips

Do not put your marital status, religion, height, weight, picture or irrelevant personal information on your resume! Most recruiters and HR professionals will discard resumes with personal information. Current employment laws prohibit employers and recruiters from considering information such as age, marital status and other information that is not relevant to being considered for the job/position. Pictures are a real problem. Your picture can not be considered in determining if you are to be interviewed or hired. This would be a violation of most EOE laws. Most companies will not consider a resume with a picture to be sure they are in compliance with EOE.

Never put your Social Security Number on your resume! It is inviting someone to take your identity. They already have your other information such as your name, address and phone number.

Never put your references on your resume! References are a valuable part of your job search. Make sure there is a mutual interest before giving up your references.

Have more than one version of your resume available! If your resume is to be Emailed, scanned or faxed, it should be in a plain WORD doc, or text format. A more visually appealing version can be available for mailing, or delivering by hand at the interview.

Check for errors - Proofread your resume! Sloppy resumes are viewed as a lack of professionalism. A resume with grammatical mistakes and spelling errors will reduce the client's level of interest. Your commitment to the job search will be in question.
